RANONG

The provincial capital is 568 kilometers south of Bangkok. Ranong is probably best known for its game-fishing, a hot spring resort and the comparative ease with which remote islands, including the Surin Marine National Park, (actually in neighboring Phangnga province), can be reached. Ranong's hot spring is located some two kilometers east of the provincial capital near Wat Tapotharam. Water temperature is a constant 65 degrees Celsius. The water is believed to be beneficial to health thanks to unusually high sulphur content. Forest surrounding the hot springs features an arboretum, known as Raksawarin, which contains leisure pavilions and bathing rooms. The Hat Chan Damri Beach near the Kra Buri River estuary offers a view of Victoria Point, a Burmese township that attracts domestic tourists for reasonably priced local product sand souvenirs. The beach also offers picturesque sunsets. Phayam island, some two hours from the provincial capital, supports a pearl farm and sea gypsy village. Other islands in the immediate vicinity, such as Sin Hai and Chang, are eminently suitable for game fishing, scuba diving and snorkeling. The Laem Son National Park, which extends into neighboring Phangnga province, covers a hilly coastline of fine beaches, mangrove swamps and rainforest, and some 20 offshore islands, certain of which, including Kam Yai, Kang Kao and Kam Noi, offer beaches and coral reefs. Mainland beaches include Prapas, Laem Son and Bang Baen. The latter is known for its length, fine sand and prolific seashells. Wildlife includes more than 40 bird species and lesser mammals such as wild boars, lesser mouse deer and black giant squirrels. Ranong province boasts several picturesque waterfalls, scenic viewpoints of the Andaman Sea, and naturalists will enjoy the 480-square kilometer Khlong Nakha Wildlife Sanctuary. Visiting the latter requires special permission from the Wildlife Conservation Division of the Royal Forestry Division. Applications should be made at least one month in advance. Ranong is conveniently accessible by road from Bangkok or Phuket.
