SATUN
This coastal province edging Thailand's Indian Ocean coast borders Malaysia and covers some 2,478 square kilometers. The provincial capital is located 973 kilometers south of Bangkok. Satun's major tourism attractions are three national parks. The largest and most famous is Tarutao Marine National Park, which is located near the Thai-Malaysian maritime border. Tarutao comprises 51 islands covering a total area, inclusive of sea, of 1,490 square kilometers. The largest island, Tarutao, was formerly a penal colony. The archipelago contains several stunning viewpoints and numerous opportunities for snorkeling and scuba diving among pristine coral reefs fringing several islands. Due to climatic conditions, the best time to visit the park is November through May. The departure point is Pak Bara pier in Amphoe Langu, which is also the departure point for the Mu Ko Phetra National Park which extends into neighboring Trang province, and also features several picturesque islands, including Ko Phetra, Ko Khao Yai, Ko Lalobaentae, Ko Lidi, Ko Bulon, Ko Laoliang and Ko Perama. The third national park, Thale Ban, is near the Thai-Malaysian border and comprises waterfalls, mountains, lush rain forests and a picturesque lake.
